So this is actually just a question (and kind of a test since this is the first time I'm using the virtual group.
How do you choose names for your characters?
Sometimes, I combine interesting names I find in the obituaries. Other times, I use a baby name book. Sometimes the character names just come to me without any rhyme or reason.
I use a couple of different strategies, based on what I’m writing!
When writing a contemporary story, sometimes I go to a social network like Facebook, select a friend, and then take a look at their friends. I try not to name a character after a particular person, but will combine different first and last names that I see there.
When writing something more historical, I research what names were most popular in the years the characters were born. Similarly, with near-future or fantasy kinds of names, I’ll look at what names are popular now and try to project what variations might be found in the future or in an alternate setting.
Once in a while, I’ll come up with a character name without knowing what story they belong in...
This issue continues to haunt me. Great question. I usually give characters a pending name and by the end of writing, if no better names come forth, I'll just keep the ones they have. Names, though, may not matter as much as we think. They can be cool, like a Tarantino character always has a cool name- Dr. King Schultz, Django, SS Col. Hans Landa) But that can be distracting if all the characters have really cool names. Simple names work just fine. Tom (Sawyer), Carrie (White), Michael (Corleone), Tyler (Durden).
